How to Play Seal the Deal
PDF Version Here
Aim:
To win the game, you must be the first player to complete a full seal. A complete seal consists of 4 parts:
• Head
• Flipper
• Belly
• Tail
Game Setup:
- Separate the Decks: Create 4 separate, face-down piles for the following cards - Fish, Action, Seal & Predator. Give each pile a good shuffle.
- Deal Action Cards: Deal 3 Action cards face down to each player. Players can pick up and look at their cards.
- Deal Predator Cards: Deal 1 Predator card face down to each player. This card stays face down on the table.
On Your Turn:
Play proceeds clockwise. Each turn has 3 main phases:
- Draw an Action Card: Pick up 1 Action card and add it to your hand.
- Go Fishing: This is how you collect fish tokens that you'll use to buy cards later.
• To Fish: Flip the top Fish card face up onto the table.
• Keep Going: You can flip as many Fish cards as you like and may choose to stop and collect your fish at any time.
• The Haul: The number of fish you collect is the sum of the numbers on all the Fish cards you've accumulated this turn.
• Example: If you turn over a "2", a "4", and a "3", then stop, you collect 9 fish from the box.
• Beware of the Empty cards: If you flip an Empty card at any point, you immediately lose all the fish you accumulated this turn.
• Fishing Ends: You must stop fishing immediately when an Empty card is revealed. You still continue with the rest of your turn, but do not collect any fish.
• Reshuffle: There are 5 Empty cards in the fishing deck. Keep them in a separate pile as they are drawn so you can
track how many remain. As soon as the 5th Empty card is discovered, immediately reshuffle all Fish cards, including the Empty cards, to form a new draw pile. - Take Up to 3 Plays: After fishing, you may take up to 3 plays. You do not have to play at all if you don't want to. You do not have to play in any particular order and you can have multiple of the same type of play.
Your options for a play are:
• Buy a card.
• Play an Action card.
• Attack another player
Buying a Card:
You can use your fish tokens to buy cards. The cost of each card is shown at the bottom of the card and also listed below:
• Action = 3 Fish
• Predator = 6 Fish
• Seal = 9 Fish
When you buy a card, you immediately draw the top card from the corresponding pile.
• Action cards are placed into your hand.
• Seal cards are placed face up on the table in front of you.
• Predator cards are placed face down in a pile to the side of your seal cards.
Action Cards:
To play an Action card, follow the instructions on the card and place face up next to the Action card draw pile to create the Action card discard pile.
• Action Card Reshuffle: If the Action card draw pile runs out, reshuffle the discarded Action cards to create a new draw pile.
• Free Actions: The yellow Action cards can be played at any time, even during another player's turn, and do not count as one of your three plays.
Predator Cards & Attacking:
Predator cards are your keys to attacking other players' seals or defending your own.
Attacking: You can attack another player as one of your 3 plays to try and steal a Seal card from them.
- Initiate Attack: Secretly choose the Predator card you want to attack with. You can look through all your Predator
cards to select one. Announce which player you're attacking and which seal part you're trying to steal. - Defend: The defending player secretly chooses a Predator card to defend with, they can choose any one of their
Predator cards. - Reveal: On the count of 3, both players place their cards face up on the table.
Successful Attack:
- To succeed, the defending animal must be the one highlighted in red on the attacking Predator card.
- The attack hierarchy is: Polar Bear beats a Walrus | Walrus beats a Killer Whale | Killer Whale beats a Polar Bear.
- If successful, you steal the chosen Seal card from the defending player and place both attacking and defending
Predator cards to the bottom of the Predator draw pile face down, neither of which are replenished.
Unsuccessful Attack:
- If the attack is unsuccessful, both the attacking and defending Predator cards are placed to the bottom of the
Predator draw pile face down. - The defending player immediately draws the top Predator card to replace the one they lost.
- If both animals are the same this also counts as an unsuccessful attack.
No Defence: If a player has no Predator cards to defend with, any Predator card can be used to attack and steal a Seal card from them, regardless of the animal. This card is then placed face down at the bottom of the Predator draw pile.
Things to Know:
Fish Tokens: Fish tokens are traded in and out of the box unless a card states otherwise.
Extra Seal Parts: If you have 2 or more of the same seal part, you have 2 options:
- Trade: Trade one of the duplicate Seal cards back to the bottom of the Seal draw pile in exchange for a new Predator
card as one of your 3 plays. - Keep it: You can keep the duplicate as a defence tactic. If the card is stolen, your seal still remains complete
The End of the Game:
The game instantly ends as soon as one player completes their full seal - Head, Flipper, Belly, and Tail.
